this is what i imagine:

first half:a union fighting a meaningless battle,there is nothing but rubble,they win,but there is no real victory for their families and friends are dead,they are the only ones left...

second half:they try to find hope but cant,they tried to rebuild civilization but there are not enough people or supplies,though they still keep on living for a purpose unknown...
